So … What the heck are Spot UV Business Cards?

You are undoubtedly familiar with the traditional full UV gloss business card, as nearly most business cards that are produced in the world, are produced in this manner. So … "spot uv" means that the glossy UV coating is only applied to certain "spots" on the business card. Graphic designers are able to select vector shapes such as text, logos, or any other design elements, and by creating what is called a "layer mask" they are giving instructions to the spot coater to only apply gloss to that particular location.

For example, lets say you have a window cleaning business. The front of your card might have a picture of a nice suburban home, and by creating a layer mask on top of only the windows, only the windows would be printed with a glossy finish, thus highlighting them as they will catch the light when the card is tilted or viewed at different angles.

Much of good design is about creating visual contrast, that leads the viewers eyes to focus on the elements that you/the designer deem important. Spot UV is a great way to emphasize what elements are important on a business cards, and it also creates a textural or tactile contrast as well. When the user runs their thumb over your card design they will feel the smoothness of flat matte with the sleek sensation of high gloss mixed in between.
